Mr. Adel Soltan

Consultant gynecologist, Lead benign gynaecology and ambulatory gynaecology services
Liverpool Women’s Hospital

In the UK, I started my career in obst and gynae in 1992, initially as Senior SHO in the North East (Northumberland) and then as a Specialist Registrar in Gloucester (1993-1995).

I joined Liverpool Women Hospital in 2007. In 2012, I started the ambulatory gynaecology service in Liverpool. I also became, in the same year, the gynaecology educational Lead for junior doctor training including being the Lead for Foundation doctor and GP training.

In 2013, I helped establishing a purpose built ambulatory suite within the gynae outpatient department and supported nurse training to establish a core of dedicated nursing team from the gynaecology outpatient department trained to support the delivery of ambulatory gynaecology services.

In 2013, I became the Lead for gynaecology ambulatory services in the hospital and was also elected, in the same year, as staff governor in the trust. In May 2015, I helped hosting the Hologic Masterclass Training in hysteroscopic surgery in Liverpool. In 2016, the ambulatory unit/service in Liverpool was shortlisted for the best HSJ award. In 2018, I became the Lead for Benign Gynaecology in the Trust.

Since established, in 2013, the ambulatory gynaecology unit has received excellent patient feedback and increasing demand with capacity gradually expanding from 500 patients/year (in 2013) to currently over 1500 patients a year being treated with the intention of “see and Treat” approach and with an expanding range of procedures on offer.

Liverpool ambulatory unit is also a training hub for both nursing and medical staff. In 2014, we introduced training programme to train Band 2 nursing staff to Band 4 to support service delivery and also provide a training and progression opportunity for the Band 2. On the medical front, we trained a number of doctors and the unit was visited by teams from other trusts in the country. Currently we have 3 ATSM trainees in benign gynaecology besides Specialist nurse training in hysteroscopy.
